Treating burns or scalds on children

I found out a rather disturbing fact today….

More than a hundred children and young people attend accident and emergency units every day with a burn or scald injury, and that high number actually increases dramatically in the four weeks around bonfire night. Scary isn’t it?

I know what to do, but do you?

I’m happy to say I’m pretty safety conscious with littlies, but accidents can happen and I’m lucky that my training helps with my super safety side, and my first aid backs me up if anything were to happen. What about you lovelies? Would you know what to do if your child were burned or scolded?

Don’t panic if you don’t know…

Tesco Baby & Toddler Club BabySafe campaign have got together with experts from the British Red Cross to produce a video that tells parents what to do in case they find themselves in such a situation. The advice in the video shows parents how to deal with burns and scolds first hand.

This video is one of a series of videos produced as part of the fifth Tesco Baby & Toddler Club BabySafe campaign – an initiative to offer free, basic first aid training to parents, grandparents and carers. You can watch the video here, but if (like me) you are often short on time, there are some key pointers below from the British Red Cross to prepare you what to do if an accident should happen.

British Red Cross suggest what to do if a burn or scolding accident should happen:

  • Run the area under cool water for at least 10 minutes

  • Remove water from an injured area unless the material is sticking to the skin

  • Don’t apply cream, ointments, grease antiseptic spray or plasters

  • Loosely cover burns with a non fluffy material – cling film is ideal

The video above, plus a webinar and a film on accident prevention in the home are currently available on www.tesco-baby.com.

The following videos will be made available on the following dates:

Meningitis 21 November 2011
Choking 9 January 2012
Unconsciousness 20 February 2012
(breathing / not breathing)

Following the launch of each video, an expert from the British Red Cross will be available to answer all questions during a Twitter chat on @TescoBabyClub.
