Today after just over two weeks in my care, Nanna went back home.
It’s taken a gazillion calls and rants to get her the care she needs at her own home – the place she has been desperate to get back to since her horrific fall two weeks ago.
Nanna fell on her way to bed. A whole flight of stairs, all the way down, knocked unconscious. Three hours unconscious until she came around and pressed her lifeline.
Not one broken bone but terrible bruising, a small bleed on the brain and aches and pains do bad it’s taken two weeks to get her to the point she can dress and wash herself and make a cup of tea.
Two weeks of 24 hour care washing and dressing her, noticing every inch of her personality I’d forgotten. Looking into her beautiful eyes I’d not looked into for such a long time, tucking her into our spare bed like she used to me so many times as a child. Telling her everything will be ok, because it will.
She’s strong, she’s determined, she’s a fighter. She’s going to be O.K!
Today Nanna went home. I took her with my Mum and we settled her in and after she was feeling confident, We left.
Leaving her was terrifying. I wanted to run back and pack her into the car and bring her back. But she’s where she wants to be, in her own home. She’s so happy.
All those struggles and stresses nursing her back to health, call upon call to doctors, physios and social services, every single stress is worth it for that smile. She’s home.
There’s no place like home.

oh your poor nan, what a nasty fall! I am glad she is back in her own home I have all 4 of my granparents still living at their own houses and they don’t want to be anywhere else, although it is a worry. Does your nan have room for a bed downstairs? might be worth moving her there is so to prevent another fall on the stairs x
