We love penguins, and so imagine our delight to discover that today, very close to us, the all new Penguin Ice Adventure has opened its doors at The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham!
The Antarctic-themed enclosure is home to a colony of 12 Gentoo penguins that have flown over 11,000 miles from Auckland, New Zealand to make the Midlands attraction their brand new home. How super-duper cool is that my lovelies?
The fantastically themed Penguin Ice Adventure offers a real insight into the lives and quirky habits of these cheeky birds; whether it’s hearing the unmistakable trumpeting call as the colony communicates to one another, watching them dive in the icy water up to 450 times a day or seeing them playfully move rocks around their home.
Multiple viewing platforms, an indoor temperature of a cool eight degrees Celsius and an interactive ice wall ensure visitors have a truly authentic Antarctic experience. There are also designated areas within the attraction for guests wanting to do their best imitations of the waddling birds.
Members of the public have also been given the chance to name the colony with Alf, who is the leader of the pack, Ginny, Lolly and Brick already chosen and further competitions currently underway to choose suitable names for the rest of the birds.
James Robson, Curator at The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham, comments: “Penguin Ice Adventure has been about five years in the making so it’s amazing to finally see the end result and welcome these cheeky birds to our attraction.
“They’ve all settled into their brand new enclosure really well. As a colony with a mix of ages, the older birds support, teach and encourage the younger birds which is lovely to see and has meant that they’ve all made a really smooth transition and are enjoying their new home.
“They spend a lot of time swimming and diving and are constantly exploring their 70,000 litre pool within the enclosure, and visitors can see them swooping underwater through a domed window at the bottom of the pool. They’re the fastest swimming penguins and are so charismatic and loveable, we’re certain they’re going to be really popular with all our visitors and the attraction itself will really enhance the whole all-weather day out experience.”
The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham transports visitors to an amazing underwater world, where they get to see incredible sea life from all over the planet, from the coast of Britain and the chilly Antarctic, to the tropical waters of the Caribbean.
The aquarium is home to over 2,000 creatures, such as sharks, including the UK’s only hammerhead sharks, as well as a rescued Giant Green Sea Turtle, otters, jellyfish, piranha, octopus and rays.
