Without wanting to sound too geeky – I love language development!
I loved studying child language development during my degree years and was fascinated so much by it, that I learned how to baby sign. Why? Because I knew it encouraged language development and communication and I wanted to share that with everyone!
When babies turn into toddlers, then to little ones and older, I just love listening to their words, the sounds, the funny things they say. I’ve heard some weird and wonderful things over the past 22 years during my career and now my own two give me great delight everyday with their often funny outbursts!
From the first word to the pre-school mispronunciations I love every single language step.
Today, was one of my favourite moments. Boo telephoned her Nanna.
She pressed the right numbers on the phone as I said them, she waited for the rings and Nanna’s voice and then I heard the most beautiful dialogue spoken between them on speakerphone.
Boo: ‘Hello Nanna! We will be there at 1 o’clock!’
Nanna: ’1 o’clock? Great! Is daddy coming too?’
Boo: ‘Yes that would be delightful!’
(My mum starts laughing!)
Nanna: ‘Delightful! Great we will see you soon!’
Boo: ‘See you soon Nanna, bye bye then!’
I love her ways, her confidence. At only 4, was I calling my grandparents and speaking so eloquently? I don’t think I was. She amazes me as does little Oscar.
Oz makes me giggle most days with his out-loud thinking;
‘I’m marrying you mummy when I’m bigger as daddy!’
‘I like the crebblelin hulk mummy!’
‘Indie dog you’re my gaw-juss doggy!’
‘ I don’t like bom-atoes my taste buds say urgh!’
‘Pleasy-weasy can I have another biscuit and then I will say no more – ok?’
I pop all of these phrases into my memory bank, my place of happiness that I go to when they say or do something I never want to forget. My journal.
I love language development.
I love their happy talk.
I loved today hearing Boo chatting with her Nanna.
