I’m incredibly lucky – I had two wonderful homebirths surrounded by my husband and mum (first baby) and just my husband for my second. There were two midwives (One for me – one for baby) and it was wonderful.
Being at home there were no strict hospital policies to follow when it came to having people around me – which makes me doubt recent research conducted by Channel Mum.
Crowdbirthing
Apparently young mums are having ‘crowdbirths’ a term created following this research that many had FIFTEEN present at the birth of their babies! (The average was 8 – not including medical staff.)
Really? FIFTEEN people in one small room, plus midwives and medical staff? Really?
As a professional, mum, and friend of many midwives and medical professionals, I find this new story a little hard to believe for many reasons. The main reason being health and safety of both mum and baby.
How can FIFTEEN people (not including medical staff) fit safely in a hospital delivery suite? How would they be allowed to stay? What happens if there were a medical emergency – would doctors climb over the family members?
I din this research hard to believe – do you? Tell me lovelies – did you have a ‘crowdbirth?’ How many people were at your baby’s birth? Do let me know – I’m fascinated to hear about this new trend!

I had a lot of people present at my birth for medical reasons. From memory there were 8 people in the room when he was born. Actually the energy of it was very uplifting. Having a crowd cheering me on (slash wanting to end their shifts :)) helped me out when I was flagging. That being said they were strangers and professionals, I don’t know if my mates could handle it!
